Jeevasamadhis in Puducherry
Sri Viyoma Munivar

Sri Viyoma Munivar was born as Munusamy on 30 December 1881 in Virudhachalam, Tamil Nadu. From childhood, he was deeply interested in spirituality, Siddha knowledge, herbal medicine, and mystical sciences.
Learning from His Guru
Munusamy became the disciple of Guru Pazhamalai Nathar, who taught him Siddha knowledge, Panchapakshi Shastra, and spiritual practices. Wanting to gain deeper wisdom, he later spent 11 years in Kerala, mastering herbal medicine and traditional healing.
A Healer of the People
After returning to Virudhachalam, Munusamy used his knowledge to help people. He treated illnesses with herbs, sacred ash (Vibhuti), and prayers. People believed he could remove fear, evil influences, and suffering through his spiritual power.
Arrival at Villianur
In 1942, Munusamy arrived in Villiyanur near Puducherry during the Masimagam festival. After worshipping at nearby temples, he rested in the temple courtyard and entered deep meditation. An elderly woman selling tapioca kindly offered him food every day, showing great compassion.
When the old woman became seriously ill, the sage sent her sacred ash from the temple and asked that it be applied to her forehead. To everyone’s surprise, she recovered quickly. This miracle spread throughout the village, and many people began visiting the sage for guidance and healing.
Founding Vyoma Ashram
The sage settled in Villiyanur and established Vyoma Ashram. From then on, people respectfully called him Vyoma Munivar. The ashram became a place of prayer, education, charity, and service.
Serving Humanity
Vyoma Munivar believed that serving people was equal to serving God. He started a school for poor children, fed the needy, and treated the sick. He also built a Gnanasabha to spread the teachings of love, equality, and compassion.
Inspired by Vallalar Ramalinga Swamigal, the sage taught that God is one and all living beings are equal. He encouraged people to rise above differences of religion, caste, and language and to live with kindness, brotherhood, and selfless service.
A Saint of Miracles
Many people believed that Vyoma Munivar possessed extraordinary spiritual powers. His followers said he could know a person’s problems without being told and guide them toward peace. Every year, he conducted Jyoti Darshan and community feasts

Book on Healthy Living
Sri Viyoma Munivar encouraged a simple and disciplined lifestyle. His teachings, published in the book “Amalayogam,” he emphasized: eat only when hungry, avoid overeating, follow natural habits. Live a disciplined and healthy life to prevent disease.
His Final Blessing
Knowing that his earthly life was nearing its end, Sri Viyoma Munivar instructed his disciples to build his Samadhi at the place where he had meditated. He attained Mahasamadhi on 2 January 1991, on the sacred day of Arudra Darshan, at the age of 100.
Today, Sri Viyoma Munivar is lovingly remembered as Thirukanchi Samiyar. His Samadhi at Villianur continues to attract devotees who seek spiritual guidance, peace, and blessings. His life remains a shining example of compassion, selfless service, wisdom, and devotion to humanity.
