Sri Kathirvel Swamigal hailed from Yazhpanam in Srilanka (present-day Jaffna). A soul of profound renunciation, he transcended all worldly attachments and arrived at the sacred land of Puducherry, drawn by divine will. Understanding that all material desires are obstacles to spiritual realization, he had come to recognize that true bliss lies in God-realization—a truth that became the foundation of his spiritual journey. For a sannyasi of his stature, living this ascetic life came naturally.

Life of Renunciation and Service

Swamigal stayed at Silthankudi in Puduvai (Puducherry West), living a life of complete simplicity. He possessed an emaciated yet strikingly divine physical form, with contemplating eyes that reflected deep spiritual wisdom. He is reported to have walked backwards always, a unique practice that marked his spiritual discipline. His sandals were thorn embedded, testimony to discipline.

Swamigal frequently visited Muthialpet, where he would hand over a kizhangu (root tuber) to an old lady, asking her to roast it. He would then keep this as his food for three to four days continuously, sustaining himself on the barest minimum. The traffic including cars, rickhaws and pedastricans always give way for him.

Compassion Toward All Beings

All French authorities and other dignitaries would take off their caps in respectful reverence when they encountered Swamigal. While Swamigal walked past in meditative silence, his presence and aura alone could evoke deep goodness in people of his time.

His compassion extended even to treating the ill with medicinal herbs, demonstrating his knowledge and care for suffering beings. He showed particular kindness toward the impoverished, embodying the ideal of selfless service.

Divine Events and Final Journey

God himself then sent Vadalur Ramalinga Vallallar (Arul Prakasha Vallalar) to consecrate this Swamigal. He thus came here, accomplished this sacred task, and returned back.

Swamigal went all silent in meditative mode ever since, his divine merger drawing near. At that moment, a divine voice from heaven commanded him to prepare for his union with the Almighty. He then stopped locomotion altogether.

Devoted sadhakas (spiritual practitioners) thronged around him. He chose a mangofield as his final resting place, spiritually consecrating it. The larger mandpam was constructed, Swamigal had then instructed that a sandalwood replica of himself be created in the mandapam.

Meeting with Subramanya Bharathi

The great Tamil poet Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi visited him at this sacred place and has written a beautiful poem in his praise. The poem reflects the deep spiritual connection and reverence Bharathi had for Swamigal, highlighting his divine qualities and the impact he had on those around him.

Legacy

Swamigal attained samadhi on 01-02-1904 Monday in the Tamil month of Thai 19th, the Somakiruthu year. His sacred samadhi is located at Silthankudi, Puducherry, where devotees continue to pay their respects and seek his blessings.
