In the village of Vēttaikāran Pudūr near Pollāchi in Coimbatore district, a boy was born into a wealthy landlord family. At the young age of six, he left his home in search of a higher purpose. His journey led him to the sacred Paḻaṉi Hills.

Meeting the Guru

At Paḻaṉi, the boy met a holy saint named Aḻukkusāmy. He became the saint’s disciple and learned spiritual wisdom and mystical powers known as siddhis. Because he often smoked bīdis, people affectionately called him “Bīdi Sāmiyār.”

The Wanderer and Healer

Appā Paithiyam Sāmy traveled through many towns and villages, including Udumalaipet. He became famous for helping people. He healed illnesses, solved personal problems, removed the effects of witchcraft, and even foretold future events. His kindness and miracles attracted many devotees.

Arrival in Puducherry

Appā Paithiyam Sāmy later spent time in Puducherry, where his spiritual power drew the attention of politicians and government officials. A devoted follower, Tiruthurai Pundi Natarajan, built an āśram for him at Karuvadikuppam, allowing many people to seek his blessings.

The Final Samādhi

On 11 February 1999, Friday, at 9:00 PM, Appā Paithiyam Sāmy attained samādhi at Salem. His followers believed he had lived a very long and extraordinary life. A samādhi shrine with his idol was built in Salem to honor his memory.

A Legacy That Lives On

Shri N. Rangasamy, the Chief Minister of Puducherry, is a devoted follower and regards Appā Paithiyam Sāmy as his spiritual guru. After winning the 2011 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election, he built another shrine near the Gorimedu Police Station. Every year, on the 28th day of the Tamil month of Cittirai, thousands of devotees gather to celebrate the saint’s birth anniversary and remember his life of service and miracles.
