A Temple of Sacred Ash
More than 400 years ago, during the time of Aurangzeb, a small temple was built on the Madukkarai Road near Ayambalam. The temple was unique because its Shiva Lingam was made of sacred Vibhuti (holy ash). For generations, devotees worshipped there with great faith.
The Special Guru Pooja
Every year, on the 15th day of the Tamil month of Purattasi, Guru Pooja was observed with great devotion. On that day alone, milk was offered to the Shiva Lingam. Since the Lingam was made of Vibhuti, regular abhishekam was not performed throughout the year. The special ritual was conducted carefully to preserve its sacred nature.
The Mystery of the Jeeva Samadhi
The temple was believed to stand above an ancient Jeeva Samadhi, the resting place of a saint who had attained spiritual liberation while alive. Elders say there were once two Jeeva Samadhis at the site. Over time, one was destroyed, and the land was leveled, leaving only one Samadhi preserved beneath the shrine, with the Shiva Lingam placed above it. Devotees believe the place radiates the blessings of the saint and Lord Shiva together.
A Living Tradition
Many people mistakenly think the temple is only a few decades old. In reality, it is believed to be over 400 years old and has been worshipped by many generations. Even today, daily pooja is performed with dedication, keeping the ancient tradition alive.
Ambal Thadiyar Temple
The temple, associated with Appar Swamigal and known locally as Ambal Thadiyar Temple, continues to be cared for by its priest, who performs daily pooja. Located about 18 kilometers from Andichandi on the Madukkarai Road near Ayambalam. Though much of its history remains hidden in time, the temple continues to be a sacred place of faith, heritage, and spiritual significance.
