Sri Ram Paradeshi Swamigal stands as one of the most revered spiritual masters to have graced Villianoor, Puducherry. A saint whose very name and origins remained unknown, he exemplified the highest ideals of renunciation and spiritual realization.

Early Life and Spiritual Initiation

Swamigal hailed from Andhra Pradesh, losing his mother at a tender age. From childhood, he displayed complete detachment from worldly life, choosing to wear only a loincloth despite being offered proper clothing. His birth name, parentage, and native place remain unknown to this day—a testament to his transcendence of worldly identity.

During his youth, while wandering, he encountered an elderly saint who recognized the divine spark within him. The elder anointed him from head to toe, and this sacred act awakened enlightenment in the young aspirant. Through this encounter, he received Gnana Dheetchai—the initiation into supreme knowledge.

The Life of a Paradesi

Following this spiritual awakening, Swamigal embraced the path of a wandering ascetic with the profound motto “Sitham Poakku, Sivam Poakku” (Transcend the mind, reach the Divine). He travelled from place to place, belonging nowhere and everywhere, until divine grace led him to Villianoor in 1855.

Villianoor, situated on the banks of the sacred Shankaraparani River (also known as Senchiyaru), possessed an abundance of natural beauty—fertile fields, lush groves, ponds, and pools. The village was blessed with the presence of the ancient Thirukaameeshwarar Temple, where Arulmigu Kokilambal presides. It was here that the divine presence drew Swamigal, and he decided to remain.

Throughout his life, Swamigal constantly chanted “SreeRam, SreeRam,” and since his true name was unknown, the people lovingly called him ShreeRam Paradesi Swamigal. Though he stayed in Villianoor, he maintained his nature as a paradesi, never residing permanently in any one place.

Connection with Ameena Saarangapani Pillai

Swamigal eventually formed a deep spiritual bond with Ameena Saarangapani Pillai, the French-appointed administrator of Villianoor, known for his piety and compassion. One day, Swamigal revealed to Pillai that his earthly mission was nearing completion and instructed him to establish his samadhi on Pillai’s land in north Villianoor. He prophesied that a great miracle would one day occur at Villianoor.

In 1868, as foretold, Swamigal entered into deep yogic meditation and attained Jeeva Samadhi. His body was laid to rest as per his instructions, and over time, the samadhi became buried beneath the earth. Yet devotees, particularly those suffering from venomous bites, would circumambulate the site chanting “Om Shree Ram” and find relief.

The Divine Miracle of 1879

When the French government began constructing the Puducherry railway line in 1877, Ameena Saarangapani Pillai objected to surrendering the land containing Swamigal’s samadhi, stating it was a sacred site where people came for healing. Despite his objections, the government proceeded with acquisition.

In 1879, during excavation for the railway station’s foundation, workers witnessed blood seeping from the ground and fled in fear. When French Governor Monsieur Laugier and other officials carefully excavated the site, they discovered Swamigal’s body in perfect meditative posture, completely undecayed after eleven years—a divine validation of his spiritual attainment.

Recognizing the sanctity of this occurrence, the French government took responsibility for establishing a new samadhi at Villianoor Moolakadai, bearing all expenses and allocating an annual sum for Guru Puja celebrations. This extraordinary event fulfilled Swamigal’s prophecy and stands as testament to his spiritual greatness.
